Inside Kondex

A Room With A View: Our Lunchroom is A Home Away From Home

The first thing visitors notice when they walk through our door is that Kondex is not a typical factory. From the multi-colored tile, carpeting and vinyl floors to the varied ceiling treatments, the facility is designed to be professional but also vibrant and even a little “edgy.” Great care was taken to create a workspace that complements our culture – and part of our culture is that we like to have fun at work!

One of the best examples of blending the Kondex culture into the facility is our lunchroom. Situated directly inside the associate entrance and overlooking the beautiful landscaped patio, the lunchroom looks more like a café than a corporate dining space. It’s an impressive space visually, with part of the room soaring two floors to the exposed roof trusses. The north wall is pierced by two rows of six-foot square windows that fill the room with natural daylight, accenting the bold wall and floor colors. Acoustical tile “clouds,” plants, and original artwork help to create intimate seating arrangements.

During the design process, Kondex’s Building Steering Team toured a number of facilities to get ideas. Along with input from associates and design professionals, these tours helped us understand what features would have the greatest value to Kondex associates. We found that people like variety in their seating and recreation options. Consequently, we have a mix of small bistro tables and bar seating, along with flexible tables for four or six people. Associates can send e-mails, check their Facebook pages or surf the Internet at the two computer stations, or watch television while sitting in comfortable lounge chairs. A long solid surface serving counter accommodates catered luncheons, department celebrations and chili cook-offs we schedule throughout the year.

Associate response to the lunchroom has been very positive. Most of us routinely eat our lunches or take breaks there, helping create a sense of community as office and plant associates mingle. In fact, the lunchroom is so popular that many associates come in early or stay after their shift to use the computers or just relax.
